12 browser games you can play without touching a single key
If you want to play without the keyboard at all, look for games built around clicking and dragging: tower defense where you place towers, tile and card games where you match or move pieces, and shooting galleries where the cursor is your gun. None of the 12 games below uses a single key. Everything runs on the left mouse button or on press, hold and drag.
One rule for this list: no keyboard
We went through the control table of every game and dropped anything that mentions a key. That rules out characters walking with the arrow keys, heroes jumping with the space bar and cars steered with WASD. What was left falls into three groups: strategy games where you click, build and then watch, card and tile games where you drag and match, and shooting games where you aim and click. All of them are single-player, except Pool 8 Ball, which two people can play in turns on the same device. All twelve also work on a phone by tapping.
Curious what all those keys do in other games? Our game controls glossary walks through them one by one. This article is about the opposite: never needing them.
Click, build, watch: strategy games
These games share one thing: the real work is deciding. You click rarely and think a lot, which is exactly why they stay comfortable even on a trackpad.
Tower Defense
Tower Defense is mouse strategy in its purest form. You click a marked empty spot, a tower appears and it fires on its own at any monster that walks into range. Tower types and spells are picked with the mouse as well, so the keyboard never comes into it. Placing towers on the bends of the path keeps enemies in range for longer. If the genre is new to you, read how to play tower defense first.
Fortress Defense
Fortress Defense takes the same idea and puts archers on castle walls. A left click picks a target or buys an archer or upgrade. With 100 levels, five archer types and fifteen kinds of enemy, it suits you if you want something to come back to over many evenings.
Squad Tower
Squad Tower is the first drag game on the list: grab your hero with the mouse, drop them on the floor where an enemy waits and the fight starts by itself. Your health carries over from floor to floor, so the order you clear them in decides the whole level. Lost one? Change the order rather than repeating it.
Real Estate Royal
Real Estate Royal is a simple buy-and-sell game with no violence at all. Click a building to buy it, click again to sell when the price climbs. The game ends when your cash runs out, so putting everything into one expensive property is the quickest way to go bust. It works for kids too and gets them used to basic sums.
Resource Empire
Resource Empire is an idle management game. At first you click the miners, the lift and the warehouse one by one to keep ore flowing. Hire a manager for a stage and it runs by itself, so the clicking load drops as you grow. For how the whole genre works, see our guide to clicker and idle games.
Drag and match: card and tile games
If you want a calmer pace, these two move forward at your speed. One is played with single clicks, the other with drag and drop.
Mahjong Master 2
Mahjong Master 2 is mahjong solitaire with the tiles stacked in a pyramid. There is exactly one control: left-click two free tiles with the same pattern. Quick matches earn bonus points, and every mode has gold stars to collect. Never played mahjong before? Start with how to play mahjong.
Spider Solitaire Pro
Spider Solitaire Pro is the classic two-deck patience game. You drag a card onto another pile, and when you run out of moves you click the stock to deal a new row. Because it leans on dragging, it can feel slow on a trackpad for the first couple of hands, then your fingers get used to it. Why an empty column matters so much is explained in how to play Spider Solitaire.
Aim and click: shooting and target games
For aiming, a mouse beats a keyboard every time. In these five games the cursor is your gun barrel, your bow or your cue.
Top Shootout: The Saloon
Top Shootout: The Saloon is a score chaser set in a Wild West town, with bandits popping up all around the screen. Click to shoot, and when you are empty, click again to reload; there is no separate reload key. You must not hit the hostages, so it asks for care as much as speed.
Top Shootout: The Pirate Ship
Top Shootout: The Pirate Ship is the same series on a treasure-laden pirate ship. The routine will feel familiar: click to fire, click an empty cannon to reload. Pirates duck out from behind masts and barrels, and waiting for a clean shot works better than panic firing. Streaks keep your score multiplier alive, so not missing matters more than raw speed here.
Super HitMasters
Super HitMasters is a shooting puzzle that rewards thinking over reflexes. Drag the mouse to aim, release to fire. Bullets are limited, and most levels are solved by bouncing a shot off a wall or tipping a crate onto the target behind it. Run out of bullets and the level simply restarts, with no penalty, as many times as you like.
Archery Shooting
Archery Shooting comes down to one mouse movement: press and hold to draw the bow, let go to shoot. A bullseye gives you a bonus arrow, so building a streak keeps the round going. Arrows drop in flight, so on far targets aim a little above the centre.
Pool 8 Ball
Pool 8 Ball is the only game here you can play with someone else: take turns on the same computer or play alone against the clock. Move the mouse around the cue ball to line up the aiming guide, then click to strike. Full power scatters the balls but costs you control. To get a feel for shot strength, have a look at power control in pool, bowling and golf.
Which ones are easy on a laptop trackpad
No mouse at hand? No problem, most of this list works with a trackpad too. What matters is the type of input. The click-only games, meaning Tower Defense, Fortress Defense, Real Estate Royal, Resource Empire, Mahjong Master 2 and both Top Shootout games, feel almost the same as with a mouse. The ones that need dragging or holding, meaning Squad Tower, Spider Solitaire Pro, Super HitMasters and Archery Shooting, take a little practice: press down with one finger and slide the pointer with another.
In the shooters, speed decides your score, so chasing a high score on a trackpad is hard work. In the strategy and card games you will barely notice the difference. If your laptop is old or underpowered, our list of games for low-spec PCs might help too.
Which one to start with
- You do not want to think at all: Top Shootout: The Saloon, point and shoot.
- You want a long, calm session: Mahjong Master 2 or Spider Solitaire Pro.
- You like planning ahead: Tower Defense first, then Fortress Defense.
- You want a quick brain teaser: Squad Tower or Super HitMasters.
- You want to play side by side with a friend: Pool 8 Ball.
You will find more in the strategy, puzzle and shooting categories. A quick way to check any game: if its control table lists no keyboard key, you can play it with the mouse alone.
Frequently asked questions
Do these games work on a phone?
Yes, all twelve can be played by tapping. A click becomes a tap and a drag becomes a swipe of your finger.
Do any of them need a right click?
No. The control tables only list left click, press and hold, and drag, so you never need the right button.
Are keyboard-free games good for kids?
One-button control is easier for small hands. Real Estate Royal has no violence, and Mahjong Master 2 and Spider Solitaire Pro are quiet games. The shooters have bandits and pirates as targets, so for younger children that choice is yours to make.
