Game Genres Explained: What Puzzle, Arcade, io, Runner and Tycoon Mean
Genre names are shorthand between people who already play. If you do not, they are twenty words that all sound like the same thing. Here is what each one actually promises, and which part of Oyun Köşesi it lives in.
Games that make you think
Puzzle means there is a right answer and you have to find it. There is usually no clock, and failing costs you a retry rather than a life. Thief Puzzle Online is the shape of it: one hand, one item, and obstacles between them.
Match & Block is the family where you line up three of a kind, pop them, and watch the board fall into its new shape. Bubble shooters, block puzzles and merge games all sit here. Merge simply means two identical things combine into one better thing, as in a numbers game where two fours become an eight. Bubble Shooter is the plainest version there is.
Strategy asks you to plan rather than react. Tower defense is its most common browser form: enemies walk a fixed path, you place defences beside it and upgrade them between waves. Castle Defense runs on that idea with spells instead of towers.
Board & Card is the digital version of what is in the cupboard. Checkers, chess, solitaire, mahjong, dominoes. Checkers Legend plays exactly like the board, against the computer or against the person next to you.
Games that test your hands
Arcade is the catch-all for short, fast games with one clear rule and a score. It is also where io games live. The io name comes from the web addresses those games first used, and it means a shared arena where you start small among many rivals and try to outlast them. Paper.IO 2 is the classic case: claim ground, protect your trail.
Skill is arcade stripped down to timing. One button, one instant, over and over, with the margin for error shrinking as you go.
Running & Jumping holds runners. A runner moves you forward automatically and leaves you only the sideways choice: which lane, which gate, when to jump. Blob Man Run shows why the genre works on a phone, since steering is a thumb and nothing else.
Platformer is the older cousin, where you control the jumping as well as the moving and a level is a course to be solved with your feet. Blocky Adventures has fifty of them.
Shooting covers everything aimed, from a first person rifle to a throwing knife. First person, or FPS, simply means you see through the character's eyes.
Games with a vehicle
Racing is about being first. There is a track, there are rivals, and the finish line settles it, as in Grand Prix Hero.
Car & Parking is about the driving itself. Parking, stunts, free roaming through a city with nobody to beat. Real City Driving 2 hands you a car and a city and sets no target at all, which is the point of the genre.
Sports turns a real game into a few clicks: free kicks, basketball shots, pool, penalties.
Games where you build something
Simulation lets you run a system: a farm, a shop, a city, a spaceship. Tycoon is the version about money, where you buy a business, upgrade it and buy the next one. Idle means the thing keeps earning while you are not clicking, and you come back to collect. Idle Space Business Tycoon is both words at once.
Cooking & Food and Dress Up & Fashion work the same way on a smaller scale: a sequence of steps with a finished result you made choices about, and no way to lose.
Adventure means a story or a place to work through, including escape rooms and hidden object games where the task is to find things in a picture.
Games chosen by who is playing
Three sections are sorted by audience rather than by mechanics.
- 2 Player games split one keyboard between two people at one screen. TankHit gives one player W A S D and the other the arrows.
- Kids collects gentle games with no timers and no defeat, such as Pop It Jigsaw.
- Brain & Learning covers letters, numbers and memory, and Animals is where the friendliest characters are.
Using the words
Once the names click, browsing gets faster: you pick a genre by what kind of afternoon you want, not by the picture on the thumbnail. If you want something to think about, start in puzzle. If you have ten minutes, start in arcade. If you want to see a number grow, start in simulation.
