How to steer the hull, aim the turret and angle your armour in tank games

· By

In tank games you win by handling two parts at once, not by firing faster. The keyboard drives the hull, the mouse swings the turret, and the two move independently. Keep the front of your hull facing the threat while the turret tracks the target, and you take fewer hits and land more of your own. The third rule is cover: a tank showing only its gun over a ridge lives far longer than one parked in the open. Simulators add shell drop and stop-to-shoot on top of that; arena games reward ricochets and counting your ammo.

Hull one way, turret the other: the core controls

In most 3D tank games W moves you forward and S backward, while A and D rotate the hull. The mouse only turns the turret, the top part that carries the gun. That means you can drive left while looking right, and good tank players do it constantly. Wars Tanks 2022 uses exactly this layout: WASD to drive, the mouse to swing the barrel, left click to fire. The tank turns slowly, so aim a little ahead of anything that is moving.

Build this routine in your first minute:

Tank Simulator adds a camera layer. The C key switches between a view from inside the turret and a view from outside. In narrow city streets the outside camera shows where your tracks are going, which makes tight turns easier; out in the open the turret view is cleaner for aiming.

Armour: which side should face the enemy

Real tanks carry their thickest armour at the front, with thinner plates on the sides and rear. Not every browser game models this in detail, but in Wars Tanks 2022 the sides and back are clearly the weak spots. Two rules follow: try to reach the enemy from the flank, and never show him your own side or rear.

In practice, turn the hull roughly toward the enemy while the turret does the aiming. If you need to fall back, don't spin around and run; reverse with S so your front stays toward him. Real crews have one more trick: angle the hull slightly instead of facing square on, because a shell striking sloped plate meets more metal. Even in games without armour maths, a tank seen from the front is a narrower target.

Going hull-down: show only the gun

Tank crews call it going hull-down. Pull up behind a hill, a building or a rock so the enemy sees just your turret and barrel. As long as the hull stays hidden, there is far less of you to hit. 2020 Realistic Tank Battle Simulation teaches this better than any other game here: sitting in the open ends quickly, while poking only the gun over a crest keeps you alive to finish the mission.

Staying in one spot too long is its own risk. In Realistic Tanks Poopy War, moving after a few shots means fewer hits coming back. Keep the loop simple: peek, shoot, drop back, reappear from a different edge.

Worked example: a distant target behind a ridge

You are in 2020 Realistic Tank Battle Simulation, tucked behind a ridge, and the target sits at the far end of the map. Creep up with WASD until the hull is still hidden, then stop. Swing the turret onto the target with the mouse. It is a long shot and shells drop in this game, so raise the barrel a touch. Fire once. If it misses, watch where it lands and correct the next one. Shots fired on the move sail past the target, so come to a full stop before every shot. If the mission goes wrong, Tab restarts it.

Simulator vs. arena: two different games

In a simulator the tank feels heavy and physics does a lot of the talking. Tank Simulator has no mission list; you roam a city and a desert as long as you like, and F lets you climb out and take another vehicle. If you don't ease off before a corner, the tank rides up onto the curb and gets stuck. Realistic Tanks Poopy War is level-based instead: in the Tab menu you pick hull, gun and camouflage, and the resources you earn upgrade your tank. The mouse wheel zooms, but the screen shakes on the move, so zoom when you have stopped.

Arena games run short rounds where movement matters as much as aim. In Tank Arena the mouse steers the tank and the barrel, and the alien tanks you face are quick and accurate; strafing sideways instead of driving straight throws off their aim. TankHit takes place in 3D mazes where shells bounce off walls, so you can hit someone around a corner without a direct line of sight. The magazine holds five shells and has to refill once empty; the first player to land five hits wins.

A third path is to command rather than drive. King Defense is a tower defense game: you place your armoured vehicle and support units along the line and stop the waves coming at you. Here placement and upgrade order matter more than armour angles; our tower defense guide covers that side.

Common mistakes

Which game to practise with

Start with a plain battlefield to get the basic controls down. Wars Tanks 2022 teaches the hull-turret split and flanking.

Move to the mission-based sim for cover and shell drop.

If you like building and upgrading your tank, the level-based commander game fits.

Free roaming, with no targets to worry about, is a relaxed way to learn to drive.

The arena is for short rounds and aiming on the move.

For a friend sitting next to you, the two-player duel.

And if you would rather plan than drive, the defence line.

FAQ

Can I play tank games on my phone?

Of the games above, Tank Arena and King Defense work on a touchscreen. The other 3D tank games need a keyboard and mouse, so a computer suits them better.

Is there a two-player tank game?

TankHit is played by two people on one keyboard: player one drives with WASD and fires with T, player two drives with the arrow keys and fires with P. For more on sharing keys, see 2 player games on one keyboard.

Why do my shells keep missing?

Usually one of three things: you are firing on the move, you are aiming at the target instead of ahead of it, or you are ignoring shell drop at long range. Stop first, then aim ahead of a moving target, and a little higher if it is far away.
