Swords, catapults and stone walls: 10 knight and castle games

· By

If you are looking for knight games, this list has ten medieval games, and they split into three jobs: duelling a rival face to face, holding your castle against wave after wave, and marching on an enemy fortress until the gate gives way. One more is a quiet adventure where a lone knight has to find his way out of a maze. Three of them work as two-player games on one screen, eight of the ten also run on a phone; all of them run in the browser on Oyun Köşesi with nothing to install.

How we picked them

What ties the list together is the setting: armour, swords, bows, catapults and stone battlements. We grouped the games by the role you play in a medieval war rather than by genre. Under each game you will find its controls, how many players it takes and whether it works on a phone. If you want the rules of tower placement step by step, that has its own article: how to play tower defense.

Duels: two sides, one battlefield

All three games here are for two players. If a friend is sitting next to you, this is the liveliest corner of the list.

Medieval Battle 2P

This is the one game that asks you to think like a general. With a fixed budget you drag spearmen and ranged troops onto the field with the mouse, then start the battle and watch. Once the fighting begins you cannot step in; the result depends entirely on your formation. In two-player mode you take turns building an army and then both armies clash on the same field, and you can also play it solo. Because it uses the mouse plus W A S D for the camera, it is far more comfortable on a computer.

Stick Duel: Medieval Wars

Two stick figures stand in facing castles and try to knock each other down with arrows, catapult stones and other medieval weapons. Every shot runs on a physics engine, so your first attempt usually misses and your second one corrects the distance. The left player uses A and D, the right player the arrow keys; on a phone each player taps their own half of the screen. You can play it with a friend or on your own.

Castel Wars

Two retro pixel-art towers face each other. You lay bricks to protect yourself and pound the rival tower with the catapult on top of yours, while a hot-air balloon drops bonuses that bring new weapons. The blue player uses W A S D and E, the red player the arrow keys and P. It was built for a keyboard, so on a phone it is hard going without an external one. For more games that share a single keyboard, see two players on one keyboard.

Defend the castle: the walls are yours

Here you are not the attacker. The enemy keeps coming, and your job is to put the right unit or spell in the right place. All four are single player and work on a phone with taps.

Defenders of the Realm

Five lanes run in front of your castle and monsters advance along them from the right. You pick knights and other units from the menu at the bottom and drop them into lanes. An enemy fights the first unit it touches, so a shielded unit at the front keeps the archers behind it alive. If one lane is left completely empty, the level is lost.

Castle Defense

Magic instead of swords. As the wizard Severidric or Princess Gendra, you stop the orcs, trolls and bats marching on your castle. Point at a target and cast; the gold that fallen enemies drop buys new staffs, fireballs and poison. Fireballs are best against crowds, single-target spells against the big brutes.

Royal Elite Archer Defense

Both castles have archer squads and both fire at the same time, so your accuracy decides whether you survive. Click to set the angle and power, and the whole squad looses together. Melee troops walking up to your walls drain their health fast, so take them down first. Spend your gold on squad and castle upgrades rather than cosmetics, because a new look does not make an arrow hit harder.

Stickman Epic Battle

Defense and counter-attack in one. Resources build up and you spend them on soldiers using the buttons at the bottom of the screen; the troops march on their own and fight whatever they meet. Resources are limited, so sending units in waves works better than spending everything at once. Bring the enemy castle's health to zero and the level is won. Since the only control is a click, this is the simplest defense game on the list. There are more like it on the stickman games page.

Siege and conquest: you break the gate

In these two the goal is to take a castle, or a whole continent. One lasts a few minutes, the other a long evening.

Castle Raid 3D

You start with a single soldier on a track and grow your army by drawing its path with a finger or the mouse. Gates marked with a plus add soldiers, while enemies and obstacles wear them down. If you do not have enough troops left to storm the castle at the end, you replay the level. Short levels make it ideal on a phone. Always take a multiplier gate over an adder gate.

Takeover

The only real-time strategy game on the list. You choose one of three nations, gather resources, put up buildings, train units and march on the enemy base. The opponent does not wait while you think. The built-in tutorial covers the basics, and investing in resource buildings before soldiers in the first minutes decides almost every map. To see the wider genre, the strategy games guide is a good next read.

The lone knight: escaping the maze

Maze Escape Hero

No battles, just exploring. You guide a knight trapped in an ancient maze with the mouse or a tap, collect scattered crowns and wake the power of the holy sword. Pick up the sword without enough crowns and the door stays shut, so finish the crowns first. It is calm, single player and the gentlest game on the list for younger fans of knights. To avoid getting lost, the wall-following method from how to solve maze games works here too.

Which one suits whom

Where to start

If you cannot decide, start with Castle Raid 3D on a phone: it plays with one gesture and gets the idea of a siege across in a few minutes. If there are two of you, Stick Duel: Medieval Wars opens on one screen on both a computer and a phone. To try defense, Defenders of the Realm and its five lanes teach the most. If you prefer spells to swords, go for Castle Defense, and if you can give a whole evening to one map, Takeover is waiting. For more battles, browse the war games page and the strategy category.

Frequently asked questions

Are these knight games free?

Yes. All ten games on the list open for free in the browser, with no download or sign-up.

Which ones do not work on a phone?

Medieval Battle 2P and Castel Wars were designed for keyboard and mouse, so play them on a computer. The other eight work on a phone with taps.

Is castle defense the same as tower defense?

They are close relatives. In tower defense you usually build towers along a path; in the defense games here you place units in lanes, cast spells or aim an archer squad. What they share is stopping the enemy before it reaches the castle.

Which knight games are for two players?

Medieval Battle 2P, Stick Duel: Medieval Wars and Castel Wars all take two players on one screen. The first two can also be played alone.
