Drift in browser games: when to tap the handbrake, when to hold the gas

· By

To drift in a car game, carry a bit of extra speed into the corner, turn in, tap the handbrake, and the moment the rear steps out, steer the other way while keeping the throttle down. The handbrake starts the slide, the throttle keeps it alive and the opposite lock holds the angle. One-button drift games squeeze all three jobs into a single press, so there your only problem is when to press and when to let go. Below you get both styles, then a short list of games to practise in.

Drifting with a keyboard, step by step

Keyboard drift games usually put steering on WASD or the arrow keys and the handbrake on Space. Drift City and Urban Derby Stunt And Drift both work this way. The order goes like this:

At first, practise only the handbrake and the countersteer, with the gas held down the whole time.

Shifting the weight before the corner

In real driving a drift often starts without the handbrake at all. You lift off the throttle for a moment or brush the brake just before the bend, the weight moves onto the front wheels and the rear goes light. Turn in right then and the rear tyres lose grip. Rally drivers push the same idea further with the Scandinavian flick, swinging the car away from the corner first and then back into it.

Browser games may not model physics in that much detail, but the principle still pays off: set the slide up just before the corner, not in the middle of it. On a keyboard, release the gas for half a second, start the turn, tap the handbrake and get back on the gas. Anything you prepare halfway through the corner is already late.

Balancing handbrake and throttle

Starting a slide is the easy part; keeping it going is the skill. Too much throttle and the rear swings out until you face the wall. Too little and the rear hooks up and you just drive straight.

In most games the handbrake gets one short tap at the start, then gas and steering carry the slide. Angle too big? Add countersteer. Angle shrinking? Relax the steering and feed in throttle. A second very short handbrake tap can refresh a dying slide.

Drift City turns that balance into a score. An unbroken slide grows the multiplier, and touching a wall, a pole or a car in traffic resets it to zero. The game's own tip: end the chain yourself rather than letting a crash end it.

One-button drifting versus keyboard drifting

Some games boil throttle, brake and steering down to one action. Drifting Mania is the purest example: the car moves forward on its own, pressing the mouse button or the screen turns it in, releasing straightens it. Drifty Master uses two keys instead, A and D or the left and right arrows, with the throttle always on.

Here the game handles the handbrake-throttle balance for you, and the only skill left is timing: press just before the entry, let go at the exit. In Drifting Mania you also shorten your press as the speed rises, or the car runs off the road.

Keyboard games give you more control and more room to get it wrong: angle, gas and handbrake are all yours. A sensible order is to learn timing in a one-button game first, then add countersteering on a keyboard.

Worked example: a long right-hander

You are rolling down a wide avenue with a long right-hand bend ahead. Build speed on the straight. A few car lengths before the bend, lift off the gas for a moment, press the right arrow and immediately tap Space. The rear starts to swing out to the left.

Now let go of the right arrow and press the left one; that is your opposite lock. Hold the gas key again. The car slides sideways with its nose pointing into the bend. If you drift too close to the left kerb, ease off the left arrow and the angle tightens. When you see the end of the bend, release the left arrow completely and the car settles onto the straight.

In Drifty Master the same bend is half the work: press right before the corner and let go a little early near the exit, because the car tidies itself up.

Tactics

Common mistakes

The classic error is holding the handbrake too long: the car slows down and spins on its own axis. Treat the handbrake as a trigger, not a key to lean on.

The second is countersteering late. If you correct a full second after the rear lets go, the car has already turned sideways. Switch direction the moment you feel the slide.

The third is lifting off in panic when the rear steps out, which kills the drift. In one-button games the usual mistake is pressing when the bend comes into view; the game expects the input slightly earlier.

Which game to practise in

Starting from zero? Learn timing in a one-button game first. Drifting Mania is designed for a vertical phone screen and needs only one finger.

Next, move to two keys. Drifty Master runs on top-down tracks with just left and right, plus on-screen buttons for phones.

To practise the handbrake and countersteer you need a keyboard. Drift City rewards unbroken slides with a multiplier, which makes it the clearest way to test your balance.

If you would rather roam and set your own goals, the open map of Urban Derby Stunt And Drift is full of ramps and empty car parks.

For a tougher test of scrubbing speed with the handbrake before a turn, try Darkside Stunt Car Driving 3D: the narrow platforms have no rails, and leaving the track sends you back to the start.

FAQ

Do I need the handbrake to drift?

No. It is the easiest way to start a slide, but a weight shift or a sharp turn-in can also break the rear loose. One-button games skip it entirely.

Can I play drift games on my phone?

Yes, depending on the game. Drifting Mania, Drifty Master and Darkside Stunt Car Driving 3D all work with touch. Drift City and Urban Derby Stunt And Drift need a keyboard.

Why does my car keep spinning out?

You are probably holding the handbrake too long or countersteering too late. Tap it, and steer the other way the moment the rear slides.

Does a faster car make drifting easier?

Often the opposite. In a quicker car everything happens sooner, so you have to start the turn and the handbrake earlier. After an upgrade, treat the first few corners as a warm-up lap.
