Mahjong solitaire holds one rule at its heart. Patterned tiles are stacked in layers, and you lift them off two at a time by finding twins. A tile counts as playable only while nothing rests on top of it and one side edge stands clear. Most versions set no clock, and a wrong pick costs you nothing but a second thought. The difficulty is not speed. It is seeing which tile has to come off first so the one beneath it opens.

If you want the rule exactly as it has always been, start with the classic boards. Mahjong Solitaire Crush runs through pyramid and turtle layouts level by level, and it warns that an early mistake can lock a board solid. Mahjong Tiles uses traditional bamboo, number and flower designs on a deliberately plain board, and lets you zoom in when the number sticks start to look alike. Mahjong Quest pays medals and helper tools for quick play. Mahjong Master 2 stacks the tiles into a pyramid, layers several modes on top and hides gold stars in each of them.

Triple mahjong changes the arithmetic: a set needs three matching tiles instead of two, and that single change makes planning much harder. Easter Triple Mahjong asks for two clear neighbouring edges before a tile can be picked. Summer Triple Mahjong lays the tiles in rows, lets you take only the ends and drops whatever you take into a tray below; if that tray fills before a trio completes, the level closes. Tile Stack: Mahjong goes further still, since you never pair tiles at all. You file them into columns and build the sets of three there.

In the connect versions the tiles sit side by side rather than in a stack. You join two identical tiles when the empty path between them bends no more than twice. Easter Link is the plain timed example of the type. Birds Connect Deluxe runs fifteen levels and turns leftover seconds into points. Woodventure hands you a hint, a bomb and a shuffle for the moments a board goes quiet, though none of the three is unlimited.

Younger players do better with boards whose designs are easy to tell apart. Petzoong swaps dragons and numerals for forest animals. Cute Tiles Mahjong does the same job with bright cartoon characters and no clock at all. Zoo Mahjongg Deluxe keeps the layered stack but paints an animal on every tile. Alphabet Mahjong prints letters instead, so a child learning to read gets practice and a puzzle in the same sitting.

Nothing on this page needs installing and nothing asks you to register. Open a game, press Play and start matching, on a phone or on a computer. For boards with a similar rhythm, look through Board and Card, Match and Block and Puzzle.

How do these games play?

The selection rule decides everything else. A tile can be picked only while nothing is stacked above it and its left or right edge is open. Click two free tiles carrying the same design and both lift away, uncovering whatever they were holding down. A wrong pair simply drops back. The game never hurries you, so the real work is choosing which tile to spend first.

Four visible copies of one design are the classic trap. Take the wrong two and the remaining pair can end up buried on opposite sides of the stack with no way to meet. Mahjong Solitaire Crush states plainly that a board with no open pair left has to be restarted. Working the ends of long rows first is the standard answer, because the tiles in the middle are always the last to open.

Triple boards need a different habit. Before you open a design, count how many of it are still on the table; if three cannot come together, leave it alone. In Summer Triple Mahjong the tray below is your real limit, so finish the half-built sets you already hold before you introduce a new kind of tile. Tile Stack: Mahjong applies the same discipline to columns, where a mixed column turns into dead space.

Connect boards reward edge work. Clearing the outer rows opens routes towards the middle, and two tiles standing next to each other need no bend at all. Woodventure suggests spending a hint to confirm that you really are stuck rather than to solve the puzzle for you. The table below says who each game suits and what to expect from it.

Which one should I pick?

Left column is the game, the two right columns say whether it runs on a phone and how many people can play.

Frequently asked questions

Can every tile be selected in mahjong?

No. A tile can only be picked while nothing sits on top of it and one of its side edges is clear.

What do I do when the board locks?

Restart the level and take the upper layers apart in a different order. Some versions offer a shuffle helper instead.

What does triple mahjong mean?

A set is completed with three matching tiles rather than two. You have to know where the third copy sits before you spend the first one.

How are connect boards different?

The tiles lie side by side instead of in a stack, and the path joining two of them may turn a corner twice at most.

Can young children play these?

Petzoong, Cute Tiles Mahjong and Alphabet Mahjong need no reading at all. Spotting that two tiles carry the same picture is enough to make a move.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Open the game page, press Play and the board is dealt.
